X.O.- 1.1.10 (mixtape/review)

X.O. is an artist from D.C. He recently became apart of the D.C. Supergroup “Diamond District with Oddisee and Yu. He starts the new year off with a bang with a mixtape that not only shows promise but has cuts that are actually album worthy. He opens up with the title track “1.1.10”. The track is produced by Oddisee, it has sort of slowed down go-go vibe to it with pianos, the track is laced nicely. X.O. provides decent lyrics with references to things people from the DMV area would know about such as mumbo sauce, as well as making a claim for his own spot in the rap game.
The next track, “Fast Life”, also produced by Oddisee, also sports another good beat. Lyrics about having fun, living life and not being afraid to crash (make mistakes) but avoid obvious dumb shit.
“Lime Light”, produced by AB, is thoughtful track that has thought provoking and witty lyrics as well as a few punchlines sprinkled in here and there. Fame, the crazy things people will do for it as well as stating the realiziation of what it’s really about, the awkwardness of it all and staying true to self. Down to earth feel.
“Take Home” featuring fellow D.C. R&B artist Raheem DeVaughn is fairly self-explanatory. Nice groove track that boast lyrics of “spitting game” to get that girl to let you take her home.
“You Not Like Me” is another track with a banging beat by AB. The beat is reminiscent of “Drive Slow” / “Shawty Wanna Be Thug” and the drums from “Dreams” by Notorious B.I.G. Track is basically about keeping it real.
“Black Broadway” is another track about X.O.’s aspirations as a solo artist and again staking claim for his spot as well as giving props to the city he’s from, D.C.
“She ‘Posed To” is a tribute track to his mom that is instrospective and thoughtful. Something for those with close relationships to their mothers should be able to relate to.
“We are the 1’s” featuring Tabi Bonney is a track where X.O. experiments with fairly rapid flow and he pulls it off nicely. Talks about how he’s a nice MC and backs it up with the flow. Tabi holds his own as well.
“Crucial” featuring Gorda Brega boasts another tight beat, about how the moves that are made are crucial as the 4th Quarter in Game 7 of the best of 7 series.
“I Want In” featuring Ihsan is a decent track wanting a piece of the pie, gotta eat just like everybody else. Also wanting the attention with the opportunity to use it for the better and positively.
“Blah Blah” sports yet another tight beat from Oddisee with the drums and horns. It addresses the haters, the fakes and all the talking people in general do in regards to him or general issues facing the city or the “Blah Blah” as the title of the track says. Tight track.
“City Loves Me Back” produced by AB is done in a similar vein as “Empire State” by Jay-Z and Alicia Keyes Another introspective track about his own journey from where he came to where he is now and the progress he’s made in his career. Nice tribute to D.C. which needs artists to show more love and rep the city.
“Do It” A track that’s to the point. Tight beat from AB. States who he does it for and why he does it with a simple yet infectious chorus that will be sure to have you bobbing your head.
“City Shit” Another track about what he does for him as well as his city. Decent beat from AB.
The mixtape closes out with “How Does It Feel” produced by AB. It closes the mixtape with a thoughtful and introspective track, about the success that’s been achieved, making progress even with knowing the odds and what’s stacked against him. A nice way to close the mixtape.

Overall, the mixtape is very good with a few tracks that are more than album worthy. It’s the chance to witness the growth of a local artist, especially if you are familiar with the recently released Diamon District Album “In the Ruff”. It’s a nice mixtape to hold one over until an album comes out from him or any other album they are waiting for. IT’S FREE to download and considering you don’t have to pay for it, you get a whole lot more than you do with even some album releases. If you’re searching for local artist to support, X.O. is definitely one of them.

Interview with Arcieri Keness

I've seen this brotha perform at Always Dope and at A Baltimore Love Thing. And each time he always gave a great show. The first time I had seen him perform I knew I would have to get in contact with him because instantly you could hear how lyrical he was and you know that he isn't a typical Baltimore artist.

Here's an artist with some real substance. Check out the interview here as he took time to talk with me about his up and coming project Fast Food.

Metro Muse Review

I headed to Washington, DC to check out Metropolitan Muse Concert Series for the first time despite the hour long drive in the cold. The show featured some of the best unsigned talent in DC and solidified my idea that the DMV is a goldmine for talent. For the quality show that the people received it’s amazing that they only charge $10.

Presented by Desiree Samira Entertainment, Inc., the concert series just kicked off its weekly Wednesday (Jan. 6) night showcase at Layla Lounge. I was there doing my usual networking routine: making contacts, handing out business cards and checking out the scenery. Good vibes, good networking and good times. But what’s more important is the music right? Listed below are some performance clips along with my thoughts. Enjoy!

I didn’t know what to make of DyRec. He had a nice flow but I got more image than talent. He has the look if that’s what the industry wants these days but I needed more of what he can do lyrically. I’m not saying he doesn’t have any skills, but he needs to display it. Here he performs his joint “Party By Any Means,” which was reminds me of a party hit from the 90’s. I can’t necessarily say that’s a bad thing considering the music I here on the radio today.

Poem-Cees have some good stuff indeed. They were VERY entertaining, both lyrically and performance wise. The Spoken Word duo managed to keep the crowd engaged and not bore them with watered down rhetoric. I mean they actually put on a better show than I see most rappers do. But it’s probably because they are distracted by their own ridiculous personas; rappers just don’t put time into performing a good show. Clearly Poem-Cees don’t have that problem. Here they perform their joint “Cheatin.”

It was my second time seeing Terrence Cunningham perform and I like what he has to offer. He has a good appreciation for music and a nice voice. Check him out as he does a cover of Prince’s “How Come You Don’t Call Me”.

I have no idea where she came from, but where ever it is they produce some good singers. Midian really has a strong voice and can grab the audience attention. I am very anxious to see what she will do in 2010 and I would love to see a collaboration between her and Terrence (make it happen ya’ll). Here she sings her song “Back to You”.

Kyonte’ is on his way ya’ll. He has a good voice and stage presence. Plus, from my understanding he writes and produces. The R&B world is definitely in for a treat. Check him out as he sings his joint “Can’t Let You Slip Away”.

The Re:Union Mixtape (Review)

Yeah man they're here, Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek have come back as the duo Reflection Eternal. Starting the year off right with a tester before the release of their new album Revolutions Per Minute. Reflection decided to give a reminder of their own (sorry Hov, real recognize real) with The Re:Union Mixtape mixed by Statik Selektah (this dude got some good stuff, look out). Comprised of 30 tracks including a few new joints from the upcoming Reflection album, solo efforts, and classics.

I am happy to say nothing has changed. Reflection's marriage of dope rhymes and beats actually make you take rap music seriously again. I mean SERIOUSLY. Tek is still nice on the boards and Kwe is still has a strong argument on why he is one of the best underrated emcees.

On Revolutions Per Minute he taunts the sucker MC's aiming for his spot:

My competition is fierce/ I can see them in the rear/ But objects in the mirror are smaller than they appear

The beats are official but they do not do ALL the work. Meaning if you can't spit it was going to show. Roc Nation artist J.Cole received his second nod from me for his performance on Just Begun, which also featured Kwe, Jay Electronica and Mos Def.

Statik's "The Thrill is Gone" feat. Kweli and Styles P was great with the samples from B.I.G's Flava in Ya Ear remix verse. The Ghost took the time to address a few wrongs and convey how hip-hop lost itself somewhere between the hunger for success and greed. He kicks off his verse with:

Too many vultures in it/I think Nas said Hip-Hop is dead cause he couldn't see the culture in it

I mean just to hear the two premiere emcees on the same track is a beautiful thing. It kind of brings me back to a time when Public Enemy, NWA, and 2 Live Crew co-existed and balance was in the music.
I'm very picky when it comes to my hip-hop, so I expected to be satisfied. My only disappointment is the album doesn't drop until March. Hey, as long as they bring the madness like NCAA, I'm good.
For now you can download The RE:Union for FREE.99 at www.yearoftheblacksmith.com.
